Door to door evangelism is not my thing!  And it is a lot less tolerable than it used to be even in our culture as a whole. In other cultures though, walking up to someone’s door and engaging them in a conversation is still an acceptable even natural thing to do. This we did during our prayer walks in the villages populated by Haitian sugar-cane cutters of the Dominican Republic and it provides stories of suffering and grace.

On one such walk we met a man who, with his wife and children, fled Port-au-Prince, Haiti after the earthquake.  Their home was destroyed, their family business was destroyed, and they lost friends who were among the statistics of those killed. He now rents a shanty made of scraps and does what he can to earn a living and provide for his family.

We met a young man with a broken foot. Fortunately it was set and cast, but he must wear the cast for three weeks. That’s three weeks he cannot work and of course he does not have disability coverage or any savings.

There were great stories of people coming to know their Savior for the first time… people exclaiming that they had been waiting for someone to tell them what this Jesus thing was all about… believers happy to be given a copy of the Scriptures for their own use…
